History:
The Women of the year Lunch was begun in 1955 by three adventurous women who sought better representation after the 2nd World War. Their aim was to bring together a wide cross section of women who had distinguished themselves in their lives, to recognise their achievements and enable them to meet each other and share views on important issues. In 2011 its purpose is the same.
The lunch is for women who might be unknown nationally and internationally but who have made a substantial difference in their communities. Hence, the actress might sit next to the sheep farmer, the woman cricketer with the long term foster mother, the renowned author with the naval officer. There is no “woman” of the year. The 400 or so women who meet at the lunch are all “women” of the year.
The Women of the Year Foundation, a charity which runs alongside and in association with Women of the Year, raises funds annually to donate to special projects worldwide.
Challenges:
• We have the opportunity to upgrade and improve the contact with women and become a lynch pin in the concerns of women.
• However the women that run Women of the Year all work voluntarily, and have full-time jobs. Managing the website could become burdensome.
• It needs to managed and reviewed regularly.
• How do we create a useful and proactive site and manage it at low cost?
